In southern New South Wales, Australia, Mr. Dave Murphy lives in a refurbished homestead east of Barooga. Known as “Murph,” Mr. Murphy owns 90 hectares, or around 220 acres, of productive farmland in Murray Park. The homestead was originally the Brentnall family citrus orchard, which provided oranges for the Brentwood juice factory from the 1960s into the 1990s. Now, Murph is turning the land into a new avocado orchard.

New Avocado Orchard Produces First Harvest

Since 2012, the homestead has been Murph’s retirement project. He undertook a major overhaul on the property, removing some of the orange trees and replacing them with 7900 Hass avocado trees in 2018. This spring (it is currently spring in the southern hemisphere), Murph is harvesting his first avocados from the property. He says this is a learning year, but he has secured labor to harvest the crop and made steps towards wholesale marketing his produce.

We sincerely wish Mr. Murphy all the best and success with his new avocado orchard.
