    This week, La Molina National Agrarian University (UNALM) became equipped with the most modern post-harvest avocado laboratory. This update became possible with help from the private sector. 

    Purpose of the New Avocado Laboratory

    This lab, located in Lima, Peru, seeks to carry out studies post-harvest to optimize the quality of the Hass avocado. Researchers also want to understand the biology and behavior of the avo as well as the differences among various producing areas in the country. 

    Peru is the second-largest exporter of Hass avocados worldwide, behind Mexico, and this research will support and improve the avocado’s post-harvest quality when exporting to different markets worldwide. This avocado laboratory will also encourage science teachers and students to get involved in the booming avo industry. 

    This essential union of the University and private sectors allows corporations to support academic research, which will then contribute to vital knowledge for the development of the industry. The avocado laboratory will research issues like best protocols for handling, refrigeration, gas concentrations, and controlled atmosphere. These settings can differ based on the different areas Peru’s avocados are grown.
