In the last few years, Chile has experienced limited or even negative growth in the avocado production sector. However, forecasts indicate that the Chilean avo industry will see a huge increase in avocado production during the 2021 to 2022 season.

    Chile Increasing Avocado Production

The Chilean Avocado Committee is forecasting Chile will produce 220,000 metric tons of our favorite superfruit, marking a 57% increase from the previous year. This increase is despite the pandemic and associated difficulties with workers, mobility restrictions, and supplies. Such a drastic increase is attributed to better weather conditions and a good fruit set. Past years have been plagued by droughts and frosts that significantly inhibited fruit growth.

Where Will All The Fruit Go?

220,000 tons of fruit is nothing to shake a stick at. Where will all that fruit go? According to the Committee, 120,000 metric tons are slated for export to other countries. Last season, only 74,000 metric tons made their way out of the country. As with previous years, the majority of Chilean avocados are exported to Western Europe. The remaining 100,000 metric tons of avos will be sold in the domestic market in Chile.
