Cultivation for Sicilian avocados is starting up. In one farm in the Sicilian town of Torrenova, harvesting is underway. Bordered on one side by the Nebrodi Mountains and the other by the Tyrrhenian Sea, this area sports extremely favorable climate and soil conditions for growing avos, especially due to the balance between sun and wind.
Sicilian Avocados Close To Avo-Hungry Europe
This is the farm’s first productive year, and experts analyzing the fruits are impressed. The farm, along with others in the area, plans to compete with European production standards. They have a good case for it, as the geographic location of Sicilian avocados is much closer in proximity to the rest of Europe than many other avo-producing countries. While they only have 10 hectares planted this year, they plan to increase that number to 50 hectares in the next few years.
Those familiar with the industry look forward to seeing the avocado-producing Sicily progress in this arena in the coming years.
